Eye Protection Standards

AS/NZS 1337.1:2010 - Personal Eye Protection

This standard specifies minimum requirements for non-prescription eye and face protectors and associated oculars. They are designed to provide protection for the eyes and faces of persons against common occupational hazards such as flying particles and fragments, dusts, splashing materials and molten metals, harmful gases, vapours and aerosols. Requirements for optical qualities and low, medium, high and very high impact resistance are given, and appendices describing appropriate test methods are included in this standard. Requirements for prescription-eye protectors against low and medium impact are given in AS/NZS 1337.6. Requirements for eye protectors against laser radiation are given in AS/NZS 1337, parts 4 & 5.

The aim of this standard is to assist in the provision of safe, efficient and comfortable vision in the occupational situation, including consideration of the need for protection against sun glare and optical radiation in the natural environment. The standard does not apply to filter oculars for protection against optical radiations generated by industrial processes, which are dealt with in AS/NZS 1338, and are typically relevant to welding applications.

Lens Category Classification

Untinted and tinted spectacles/lenses are categorised by the amount of light allowed to pass through the lens. This is called the luminous transmittance. A lens with 18% transmittance allows 18% of visible light to pass through to the lens, and restricts 72% of visible light passing through the lens.

Category 0

The number ‘0’ signifies ‘a tinted lens with a range of luminous transmission between 80-100%’ Very low sun glare reduction

Category 1

The number ‘1’ signifies ‘a tinted lens with a range of luminous transmission between 43-80%’ Limited sun glare reduction

Category 2

The number ‘2’ signifies ‘a tinted lens with a range of luminous transmission between 18-43%’ Limited sun glare reduction

Category 3

The number ‘2’ signifies ‘a tinted lens with a range of luminous transmission between 8-18%’ Limited sun glare reduction
